Funding and Support

 

If you decide you would like to install renewable energy measures there is a wide range of funding sources available to help you. Information on the most appropriate funding source for an individual project can be obtained by calling the Green Energy Centre on 020 8683 6683.

A sample of the funding currently available is provided here as well as links to application forms. Details on both grants and equity sources are provided below.

GRANTS

DTI Major PV Demonstration Programme:
Up to 50% capital grants for photovoltaic installations available for domestic customers, small to medium sized enterprises and small-scale building projects (e.g. schools and community groups). Up to 40% available for other commercial organisations and up to 50% for SMEs, public sector, charities and social housing projects. Installations may be grid connected or off grid. Low Carbon Buildings Programme:
Up to 50% capital grants for photovoltaic installations available for domestic customers. For small-scale community projects, grants will be up to 50% of the capital and installation cost of the microgeneration technologies installed and are currently set at a maximum of £50,000. These grants will be awarded competitively. There are also grants for larger projects by community groups and businesses:

- Category one - for large retrofit projects grants will be up to £100,000 per project
- Category two - for major refurbishment and new build projects grants will be available of up to £1 million per project.

The proportion of eligible costs that will be grant funded will be constrained by State Aid requirements but is likely to be up to a maximum of 40% of the capital and installation costs of the microgeneration technologies installed.

Community Renewables Initiative:
If you are a community group, there may be funding and support available from your local support team. Click here to find the number of the team nearest you.

Community Energy:
The Community Energy Programme offers funding, information and support to Local Authorities, Registered Social Landlords, Universities, Hospitals and other public service organisations for the refurbishment of existing and installation of new community heating schemes.

Energy Crops:
The Energy Crops Scheme is a DEFRA programme which makes £29m available for the establishment of energy crops. If you have at least 3 hectares of land available you can apply for a grant. Click here for the details of the grant scheme.

Utility Companies' Green Funds:
Many electricity companies have established green tariffs where customers can choose to pay an additional premium on the cost of their electricity and this money goes into a green fund for new renewable projects. EQUITY

The Wind Fund is an equity fund investing in small scale renewable energy projects. It is an initiative of Triodos Bank, which also provides its management. You can contact them on 0800 056 2761.

Wind Works is a scheme launched by National Wind Power which provides the access to information, knowledge, markets and where required financing of the project for community wind farms. Interested parties would need an area that is: windy, open, at least 400 metres away from buildings and woodland, and owned by someone motivated and interested in an income from the wind.
