Energy Policy

The Government's Objectives

The Government's Energy White Paper highlights the main challenges facing the UK on the environment, the decline in available UK-sourced energy and maintaining a secure energy supply.

The Government's Energy White Paper aims to cut the UK's carbon dioxide emissions by some 60% by 2050, with real progress by 2020, and to maintain reliable and competitive energy supplies.

To address these challenges, the energy policy has four main goals :

  • Cutting UK carbon dioxide emissions by some 60% by about 2050 with real progress by 2020;
  • Maintaining the reliability of energy supplies;
  • Promoting competitive markets in the UK and beyond, helping to raise the rate of sustainable economic growth and to improve our productivity; and
  • Ensuring that every home is adequately and affordably heated.

The development and use of renewable energy will play a key role in achieving this target.

See the DTI website for more information about the Energy White Paper.
