Renewable Energy Action for London (REAL)

Overcoming the Barriers to Renewable Energy

The REAL project focuses on overcoming the obstacles to renewable energy in the non-domestic sector. It achieves this through supporting key decision makers, growing demand for renewable energy, and building industry capacity to meet the increasing demand.

Supporting Decision Makers

Key to the successful uptake of renewable energy in London is its incorporation into local strategies and policies. The REAL project team provides support to local authorities in the development of their Unitary Development Plans (UDP) and Supplementary Planning Guidance (SPG) documents.

The REAL project team provides basic renewable energy training to Development Control and Planning Officers, equipping them with the necessary knowledge and information to process planning applications with renewable energy elements.

Raising Awareness

The REAL initiative works with London's local authorities to increase receptiveness to renewable energy by the community, business and public sectors. This is achieved through localised publicity campaigns and the of provision of free and impartial advice.

Training installers, installer networks

The REAL project team has developed an accredited supplier and installer network, ensuring all clients receive high quality equipment and installation services at discounted prices.

Facilitation of installations

The REAL project team understands the challenges of developing renewable energy projects and has developed the partnerships, systems and services to overcome them. The REAL team works closely with clients and supports them step-by-step through the installation process, providing:

  • Assistance with government and other grant applications
  • Support through the planning application process
  • Post-installation inspections for peace of mind.

Promotion of sustainable energy from beacon installations, monitoring, feedback and case studies

Renewable energy is a powerful marketing tool for the benefits of sustainable energy and as such, the REAL project team is committed to ensuring that an installation and the participating organisation receives as much publicity as possible.

With support from the Energy Saving Trust's (EST) Innovation Programme, the REAL project team develops bespoke publicity plans with community clients, ensuring that energy efficiency is a key focal point:

  • High profile launch events, involving the local media
  • Development of case studies and press releases
  • Development and delivery of sustainable energy presentations and workshops

Through working closely with community clients, the REAL project team discovers how best to reach the more vulnerable community members and those subjected to fuel poverty. The team is able to support these householders in installing energy efficiency measures, allowing them to reduce their fuel bills and live in a warmer, healthier environment.
