Mini CHP Case Study

Abbeyfields Housing Development

The Abbeyfields project

In 2005 we worked with Swale Housing Association to provide affordable heat and electricity to residents of their new Abbeyfields sheltered housing scheme. The scheme, in Swale, has a new mini combined heat and power unit. Click here to download a pdf document with more detail.

The CHP supplies constant, low-cost hot water, heating and electricity and reduces emissions of carbon dioxide. Unlike conventional power stations, which lose heat to the atmosphere when generating electricity, the heat is captured to produce hot water and central heating. The efficient operation means that Swale Housing Association are able to pass the benefit on to their residents through reduced rate electricity bills (20% less than the local electricity suppliers).

Funding accessed
Swale housing association was also able to gain grant funding towards capital costs. EDF provided a grant for £2500 through Energy Efficiency Commitment (EEC) funding. An interest free loan was provided for a further 75% of capital and installation cost, through CEN’s Energy Saving Trust funded CHP support service.
