It
has been an exciting competition. Thanks should go
to all the scools who participated for the enthusiasm
they have shown and thanks also to Pfizer, the main
sponsor, the Government Office South East and Shepway
District Council, without whose support the event
would not have taken place.

Youngsters from schools across the district gathered
for a special racing challenge that set a shining example on how
to have fun and make the most of alternative energy sources - with
the heats of the super Solar Car Challenge 2004!
Pupils from nine different schools gathered at the Deal Parochial
CEP School on Friday 11 June for the event, which was organised
by the Kent Energy Centre and Dover District Council. The schools
were supplied with starting materials to build their own Solar Cars,
and special prizes were awarded for the fastest and best-designed
sun powered 'hot rods'.
The 'fastest car' competition was won by Langdon Primary School
with their entry 'Langdon Lightening', closely followed by Deal
Parochial School and Wingham Primary School. The winner of the best
dressed/best designed car was Deal Parochial School
Mike Bundy added 'the Solar Car Challenge was a fun way for children
to learn about the environment, as well as engineering, science
and graphic design. It also promotes solar energy and raises awareness
in schools and in the wider community of issues such as renewable
energy, climate change and pollution.'
If additional funding can be secured it is planned that another
competition involving more schools will be run again next year.
The Solar Car Challenge is a project co-ordinated by the Kent
Energy Centre with funding from Pfizer, Government Office South
East and Kent local authorities. 12 local authorities are taking
part in the project with races in each LA area.
