South London Given £3 Million Boost To Fight Fuel Poverty

15 July 2004

One of the aims of my Energy Strategy for London is to eliminate fuel poverty. Too many Londoners are living in energy inefficient homes with poor and inefficient heating systems, this scheme will make a big contribution by improving energy efficiency in homes across South London and I commend CEN on this initiative

£3 million has been awarded to all 12 South London Local Authorities by the Government office for London (GoL) to tackle fuel poverty. This will be used to provide grants for heating and insulation measures through CEN's Coldbusters Grant Scheme.

Coldbusters is managed by CEN, and the scheme provides grants of up to £4,000 to help residents who are vulnerable to the cold keep warmer and healthier in their homes. Coldbusters provides a comprehensive package of measures, including loft insulation, cavity wall insulation and draught proofing. Residents may also be able to get replacement boilers or new central heating systems. The total package could be worth up to £4,000

Mayor of London Ken Livingstone said: 'London consumes an enormous amount of energy, more than the whole of Ireland. We must reduce the amount of energy we consume and generate more of our energy from renewable sources to ensure a sustainable future for London.

One of the aims of my Energy Strategy for London is to eliminate fuel poverty. Too many Londoners are living in energy inefficient homes with poor and inefficient heating systems, this scheme will make a big contribution by improving energy efficiency in homes across South London and I commend CEN on this initiative'

Coldbusters is available to residents in South London who own or privately rent their home and who are receiving one or more of the following benefits: Income Support; Income Based Job Seeker’s Allowance; Council Tax Benefit; Housing Benefit; Guaranteed Pension Credit; (and in some areas) Working Tax Credit or Family Tax Credit with earnings of less than £15,000
