Tens of thousands of Kent children will be
discovering how we can save our
planet from global warming thanks to an innovative new project
at Wildwood, Kent's unique Woodland Discovery Park.
The launch of what will be one of the UK's leading renewable
energy demonstration projects is taking place on 10.00am Tuesday
16th August. The launch will see the gathering of community
leaders, politicians and home owners wishing to learn how
they can save money and the planet by using renewable energy.
Peter Smith Wildwood's Chief Executive said "we are
more than aware of the specific dangers that global warming
pose to the future of British wildlife and our own way of
life"
The hundreds of thousands of school children and members
of the public that visit Wildwood will be able to learn about
British wildlife while being kept warm by a biomass log stove,
washing their hands in water heated by solar thermal panels
and with their way lighted by photovoltaic panels.
Wildwood Trust is setting an example in energy conservation
and is hoping its visitors can learn from its scheme which
is powering and heating their new Wildlife Education Centre
from renewable sources.
The launch of the Wildwood project will let us reach out
to community
organisations, schools and home owners to show them just how
much money they can save by using renewable energy sources.
Wildwood is situated in 35 acres of managed woodland, perfect
for fuelling a biomass stove. Stoves in each of the two rooms
in the building provide space heating. Although the burning
of wood does release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, it
is equal to the amount of carbon dioxide absorbed by the tree
or coppice during growth, and as such the process is carbon
neutral providing the biomass is from a sustainable source.
The Education Centre is insulated to a high standard to ensure
that as little energy as possible is needed to keep it warm
and comfortable - a useful principle to follow in our own
homes, and one that can save money too!
The major cause of climate change is the emission of carbon
dioxide into the atmosphere through fossil fuels. The best
way to reduce these carbon emissions is to use less energy
and generate what we do use from renewable sources.
